Hemp and marijuana are both derived from the same plant species: Cannabis sativa. Within C. sativa are varieties that are bred for various purposes. Plants grown to produce fiber and seed products are called “hemp” and plants grown for medicinal or recreational purposes (traditionally, a high THC content) are referred to as “marijuana.” These definitions have led to the conventional notion that marijuana products are high in THC while hemp products contain little or no THC and are high in full spectrum oil. As the cannabis industry continues to grow and research attempts to further elucidate genetic differences between cannabis and hemp, this terminology and how we classify cannabis plants could (and should) change.

For policymakers, a limited and often misinformed knowledge in cannabis genetics makes differentiating hemp and marijuana a difficult and superficial task. In the 1970s, Canadian scientist Ernest Small published a taxonomic report in which he drew an arbitrary line: he decided that 0.3% THC in a sifted batch of cannabis flowers was what determined the difference between hemp and marijuana. This decision, written 30 years ago in obscurity has had far reaching ramifications for how countries all over the world regulate cannabis. In the US, any cannabis plant with a THC content higher than 0.3% is deemed marijuana and therefore federally illegal.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an intricate network of receptors located throughout the body of all humans and animals. It regulates all bodily processes such as sleep, mood, digestion, memory, hormones, and reduction of pain and promotes and restores optimal balance throughout the body and brain, known as “homeostasis.” The ECS was discovered in the early 1980s, but evidence indicates that some version of it has existed in all vertebrates for at least 600 million years, suggesting that these receptors play a crucial role in the functioning of life.

The two major cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are most abundant in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are found primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and immune system; however, both are found throughout the body.

Endocannabinoids are molecules that are produced naturally by cells in the body (“endo” means “within,” as in within the body) that bind to and activate cannabinoid receptors. When the body does not produce enough endocannabinoids or cannot regulate them properly, we are more susceptible to illness.

Full Spectrum – Full spectrum oil includes all the beneficial constituents of the hemp plant that work synergistically for what is known as the entourage effect for a more powerful, potent and more beneficial product. In addition to hemp, full spectrum would include the following:

  • Other minor and/or major cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC, THC (within the legal limit of <.3%)
  • Terpenes
  • Flavonoids
  • Fatty acids
  • Vitamins & minerals

Broad Spectrum – Contains hemp and possibly some of the above, with the THC removed. Although trace amounts of THC remain, it is not detectable.

Isolate – Contains cannabinoids such as hemp or CBG, with no other beneficial constituents present. We believe isolates are not as beneficial as full or broad spectrum products.

Our Mighty Mojo Broad Spectrum Hemp & Mushroom Oil with 250mg of hemp use water soluble technology, increasing the rate of absorption and effectiveness for optimal results. Nanoemulsions are very small hemp oil droplets (25-60 nanometers) dispersed in the formula that work two to three times faster than droplets of the liposomal delivery method, of which can range from 100-5000 nanometers. Water soluble oil is more potent, and works quickly on a full or empty stomach.

Our Broad Spectrum Hemp & Mushroom Soft Chews use hydrophilic technology. Hydrophilic oil attracts water, while hydrophobic oil repels water, therefore resulting in a low absorption rate while passing through the blood-brain barrier. In addition to utilizing smaller droplets, charging the molecules to make them hydrophilic significantly increases its bioavailability.

The increased bioavailability of cannabinoids is inferred from scientific literature published over the past 20 years that substantiate the enhanced bioavailability of botanical and pharmaceutical actives due to the oil’s ability to remain equally dispersed in a medium and emulsion droplet size.
